Sweet relief

For the past week or so (ten days? two months? it all blurs together), Seamus has been struggling with a cold, a fever, and an ear infection ... in spite of which, he was in a pretty good mood, because that's how schmoos are ... *except* when he would get tired. He was having a really hard time getting to sleep, and then was having a hard time staying asleep (because of the fever and nasal congestion). *Plus* he was teething again. Antibiotics cleared up the ear infection -- and, as of last night, the teething pain, congestion, and fever were all finally gone, too.

Up until last night, Greta and I had been surviving (barely) on less than five hours a sleep a night. And, because of the teething, Seamus had been *biting* her while nursing. Those of us who have never had our nipples chomped on by sharp little teeth can't know how that feels ... but it was of course very stressful and upsetting for Greta.

So this morning has been the greatest morning in the history of humanity. Seamus went to bed extra-early -- 12:30am -- and didn't get up until 9:30am. Ahh sweet sweet sleep ... now the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and all is right with the world. Plus Seamus is extra cute and his hair is sticking up in a very funny way.

Sleep deprivation makes me *very* cranky ... but Greta paid me an excellent compliment this morning: "You managed to not be a *complete* jerk most of the time this past week."

Poor sick Schmoo, poor sick parents! Sick or hurt children are a bit like sick or hurt animals--in that they can't TELL you what is wrong, and they just swat the hurt part or cry or cast about. Well, later when they CAN talk, they WILL tell you (and if Blau genetics weigh in, they will talk A LOT...Tris wakes up talking and goes to sleep talking!).

In the wise words of Zorba the Greek, "What a simple and frugal thing is happiness!"

Love to all,
Auntie Teri

Enjoy that left-handed compliment while you can. In thirty years you will have attained perfection and will often be "a complete jerk" most of the time.
Be strong. You have the most challenging and most rewarding career, parenting.
The best advice my mother ever gave me was, "When they are the least lovable, they need love the most."
I tried to always remember that when they had me at my wits end, with no sleep and with no working solution. The pay-off comes later when they are better and you are rested.
Then when they think you are the center of the universe and the answer for all their needs. Then you earned the titles of love, "Dad", "Mom".

When they start talking to tell you what's wrong, you don't always want to hear/like what they have to say.
I'm glad he is recovering. Time for everyone to get some sleep.
Love,
Aunt Kathie
