Suffering the Plagues of Manhattan

Forgive me, blog readers, for I have sinned. It has been eight days since my last confession, er, post, and I hear that worry about us is approaching panic levels across the land. We've been worried about ourselves, too ... or, more accurately, I've been worried about Greta. Here's what she's suffered over the past couple of weeks:

- Severe post-partum depression ... not so bad that I ever thought she would hurt herself or Seamus (for some reason, that's the first thing that many people think when they hear "post-partum depression", probably because of that woman in Texas ... but she actually had post-partum psychosis), but bad enough that I felt like I was subjecting her to torture by leaving her to go to work.

- A milk-duct abcess ... which is every bit as much fun as it sounds. I had to take her to a breast surgeon to get it lanced, and she was also put on antibiotics, which led to ...

- Thrush.

- And then our landlord sent us a letter saying that he was raising our rent by more than 15%.

The first three of these plagues led me to first take a week off of work, and then, when that was over, to pack up Greta and Seamus and bring them to her mother's place in Connecticut. That's where I'm writing from right now -- piggybacking on a neighbor's unsecured wireless signal. Ooh, I'm bad.

Before we left, though, we visited a crazy-doctor and got her some crazy-pills. After about a week and a half now, they seem to be kicking in: Greta noted that yesterday was the first day in many weeks in which she hadn't cried.

The fourth plague has led us to decide to actually move to Connecticut, since a) rents in Manhattan continue to rise at a rate that far outstrips our annual salary increases, and b) Greta's mom found us a nice little apartment on the beach just a mile from her house.

I always wanted to raise our kid in New York City: I love that nutty place. But raising a kid on the beach shouldn't be too bad, either ... our apartment is literally fifty yards from a beautiful sandy beach (it's just the Long Island Sound, though, so Seamus will not be following in Steffi and Danny's surfin' footsteps), and about a quarter mile from a nature preserve. On Thursday night, when I went to look at the place, the landlord was showing me the beach, when I noticed that there were about a half-dozen deer grazing in the scrubby grass that bordered the sand. Deer on the beach! I took it as a sign that we are making the right choice.

Most importantly, though, we will be close to Greta's mother, who is a rock (and she rocks, as well), her grandmother, her sister, her aunt, and her nephews. Doing this baby thing without help has proven to be too much for us. Of course, Greta's plagues are all fading away, but the experience of the last couple of weeks has led us to appreciate the value of a reliable safety net.

And in any case, we have to move somewhere, since we can't afford to stay where we are. We were considering Brooklyn, but Greta says she longs to move somewhere with more trees and open space, and less spitting and honking. Our beach apartment has a balcony with a view of the Sound and a huge lawn. I envision myself sitting on the balcony at sunset with Greta, enjoying a Connecticut microbrew of some sort, watching Seamus play tag with a neighbor's kid on the lawn.

The only real downside is the deadly commute from here into NYC ... an hour and a half each way by commuter rail. I plan to use the time to catch up on Battlestar Galactica via my laptop.

Anyway ... thanks to all of you who have offered prayers and support during the past couple of weeks. Things are going to get better for us now ...

PS: There actually was a fifth plague, which struck me instead of Greta: I accidentally caused a huge amount of data loss at work. I'd like to think that stress and fatigue were to blame, and not basic stupidity.

PPS: We can't have a post without a Seamus picture ... so here's a photo of him befriending a savage beast:

Boppy Boy

We thought that we should post something, because our friend Kristen is here and reminded us that we haven't provided any updates recently. I'll try to post more about our adventures later tonight, but in the meantime, here's some cuteness for you:

Here are some things you can learn from this photo:

- Seamus loves his Boppy pillow!
- His hair is growing back
- He is a little monkey-boy
- The maniacal feeding that he's been doing lately is making him begin to look like Alfred Hitchcock.

Miscellaneous Post

Seamus in one of the very useful and cute wrap/snap onsies that doesn't have to be stretched over his melonhead (Thanks, Leif!). He appreciates it.

Jim giving Seamus a bath.

Seamus in his very cute sleepsack thanks to Uncle Joe and Auntie Kathie. They also sent a frog toy that is the first toy Seamus ever smiled at! Thanks, guys!

In other news I have been feeling SO much better the past 2 days. I don't know what's going on, but I'm just trying to go with the flow of feeling good! Today I was dancing with Seamus to Van Morrisson and Seal (thanks to the CD from Auntie Teri) and instead of just focusing on Getting Him To Sleep, I actually started enjoying feeling his cheek against mine, his soft hair against my face, and holding my little boy in my arms. I think I've turned a corner. I want to thank you akllk for your support. You have all been so wonderful. It really helps!

Seamus Steps Out!

Nanapow came in Friday night until Saturday afternoon to keep me company because Jim had to work on Saturday.

It was nice to have company and someone to force me to get out of the apartment. Right now, everything gives me anxiety, and the idea of getting Seamus ready and in the Baby Bjorn or the stroller by myself is overwhelming. So I needed a little push. Nana got the stroller out (thanks again, Lamberts!) and figured out how to push the seat back for Seamus. We got his clothes on, put the "Bundle Me" in and took off. We walked around Wall Street, past Trinity Church and back to John Street. It was a short walk but it really accomplished a lot. I can do this by myself now that we did the first run together.

Another first also happened today. I was alone in the apartment for the first time in nearly 40 days! Jim took Nana to Grand Central and Seamus accompanied him in the Baby Bjorn. It was a very cute sight, and I wish I had gotten a photo, but I was so nervous sending them off alone and giving Jim instructions about not smothering my baby that I didn't get the camera out. Jim had the Baby Bjorn on his front and the very girly diaper bag (thanks, Holly!) on his back like a backpack. I think Nana got some pics, so I'll post when she send them to me.

What did I do with my precious hour of free time? I watched some crappy reality TV, turned up to a normal volume and had some ramen noodle soup. It was nice to be alone, but I felt like my arm was missing or something. Jim loved being out with Seamus and I once again realize how happy I am to have such a wonderful husband.

For his outings today Seamus sported a striped, handknitted hat by Kristen, Rowan's hand-me-down, green "RIBBIT" pants, and the throwback striped t-shirt by Auntie Lizzie.

Pics

I have two things to add to Greta's post, below:

- Post-partum depression does indeed suck ... it makes me feel very bad for my poor greeba. I'm just glad that it's intermittent for her and not constant. I'll write more about our experiences later, but I just want to say that we have received a lot of support from those of you with whom we've discussed this ... thank you to all of you.
I'm going to write to Tom Cruise and ask for his advice.
No, seriously, Greta and I are going to continue to pursue all available options to help her out -- so that she's as happy all of the time as she is at this moment, where she is kissing Seamus' scaly little forehead and inspecting his diaper to see if it needs a change.

- I love the Baby Bjorn almost as much as Seamus does! Thank you, Souffle and Dave, for this hand-me-down, and all of the others that you've given us.

And now for tonight's pictures, of Seamus in his "Banana Boy" outfit:

Seamus is Five Weeks Old Today!

Wow - I'd like to say the past 5 weeks have flown by, but really they haven't. The past week has though. It seems like just yesterday that I was sobbing in the office of Seamus' hot doctor telling her how overwhelmed I've been with new parenthood. "You REALLY need to talk to someone." You know it's not good when you hear those words. The next day I started to feel a lot better. That was last Friday. I'm still feeling pretty up and down. This having a baby stuff wreaks havoc on your hormones. I think things are going to continue to look up though. I spoke with Martine the Midwife today and she said everything I've been feeling is totally normal, etc. I know that, but somehow I expect more from myself than the average woman. Why I shouldn't succumb to these things, I don't know. I just thought I'd get a pass for some reason. I will be trying to attend a Post Partum Depression group at Real Birth next Wednesday, the same place where we took our birthing class with the wonderful Bonu. I also have to try to get out of the apartment more, even if it's to go sit in the stairwell alone, unable to hear the baby and what he needs (of course, Jim will be with him!) And I've been told I need visitors!

We just took Seamus for a walk, Jim carrying him in the Baby Bjorn. Even with the many people walking around our neighborhood, the very noisy garbage truck, and the high pitched voices of the college girls, Seamus fell soundly asleep by the time we walked 3 blocks to the store. Jim is so cute with Seamus. He just enjoys him. I WORRY all the time. It's so nice to be with Jim. I know how lucky I am to have had a child with him. Right now, he's swaying back and forth with Seamus in the Baby Bjorn, singing, "Seamus, Seamus, Seamie, Seamie, Shame. Schmoo, schmooey, Seamus, Seamus, Shame." It's cute. Take my word.

I know---less talk, more pictures! I will post some tomorrow if I can! Nanapow will be making another guest appearance in our baby cave tomorrow and Saturday. I'm looking forward to it very much!
